The Center's goal is to develop low-input and environmentally friendly processes for converting aquatic waste into aquaculture meals derived from crawfish, crab, and shrimp. Our second goal is to assess the usefulness of manufactured aquaculture meals in various animal and plant agricultural systems. Achievements of these goals will have a positive impact for the aquaculture industries along the Gulf of Mexico, Atlantic Coast, and Pacific Coast areas where crawfish, crab, and shrimp are processed. In addition, the end products of aquaculture meals could be of interest to many stakeholders including livestock producers, feed manufacturers, organic farmers, organic processors, horticulturists, citrus growers, and conservationists. The Center and Southern University and A&M College, Baton Rouge are committed to developing methods for handling aquatic waste that fit well in sustainable animal and plant production systems. The intent of our focus on aquatic waste utilization is to support sustainable animal and plant production systems that are profitable and to promote environmental stewardship. (Note: On this website, aquatic waste refers to crawfish, crab, and shrimp waste materials. Aquaculture waste or meals and aquatic waste or meals are used interchangeably.)
