Southern University Ag Center to hold First Annual Goat Field Day

The Southern University Agricultural Research and Extension Center is planning the First Annual Goat Field Day for Saturday, April 9, 2005 at A.O. Williams Hall located on the campus of Southern University. This event is being held in conjunction with the training for the producers participating in the IFAFS (Initiative for Future Agriculture and Food Systems) goat project.

The Goat Field Day will be open to all interested producers, as well as those interested in the goat industry, in the state. The field day will involved expert lead discussions in the areas of starting a goat business, parasite control, pasture/forage management, forming a co-op of producers, and recording keeping and marketing.

An afternoon session, to be held at the Experiment Station in Baker, LA, will offer participants to learn about live evaluation for marketing and body condition scoring, hoof trimming and administering medications, and general kid management. This gathering is designed to not only educate the producers in the; but also to enable the producers to network among themselves to expand their knowledge and strengthen the goat industry in Louisiana as a whole. For more information please contact Dr. Sebhatu Gebrelul at (225) 771-2262 ext 212, or via e-mail, sebhatu_gebrelul@suagcenter.com.
