The Southern University Agriculture Research and Extension Center, in conjunction with
USDA/Initiative for Future Agriculture and Food Systems (IFAFS) Goat Project, is hosting a
goat producer workshop to be held on Saturday, July 9, 2005. This workshop serve as a follow
up to the Goat Field Day held in April and will focus on methods of controlling parasites
and the formation of goat marketing cooperatives. This workshop is open to anyone interested
in goats or already producing goats. There is no cost to attend and refreshments and lunch
will be provided. Those planning to attend should RSVP by Friday, July 1, 2005, to Teri Walsh
at (225) 771-2262 ext 316, theresa_walsh@suagcenter.com.
In addition, the Southern University Agriculture Research and Extension
Center Goat Program is currently accepting applications for Phase II of the IFAFS Goat
Project. We are seeking producers who are willing and have the potential to expand their
grazing lands and goat herd over the next 5 years. Applications will be available from
Southern University Ag Center staff the day of the workshop. If you are unable to attend,
contact Teri Walsh to arrange for an application to be mailed to you. Please note that
returning a completed application does not mean that you will be accepted into the program.
Acceptance into the program will be determined by the selection committee based on the
information in the application and an on farm needs assessment. We are only able to accept
5 producers for Phase II. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to apply, regardless of gender
or race. Applications are also available upon request from Teri Walsh at the address below.
Applications are due July 22, 2005, those received after July 22nd, will be disregarded.
