Science, Engineering and Technology

The Southern University Agricultural Research and Extension Center (SUAREC) is responding to our national and state deficiency in the lack of knowledge in science engineering and technology (SET). Our programs combine non-formal education with hands-on, inquiry-based learning experiences. SUAREC has implemented statewide programs to address these critical needs such as: "Exploring Technology”, "Science Technology and Math Academy”, and "4-H National Youth Science Day”. The outcomes of the initiative are to help youth ages 6-18 improve their knowledge; connect learning with real-world situations where youth can adopt and use new scientific methods or improved technology to solve problems; and in the long term, increase the number and diversity of youth pursuing higher education and careers in science, engineering, and technology disciplines.

There are many ways to get involved in SET:

Exploring Technology Program

This program provides youth with an introduction to information technology. This 12-hour program can be offered as a weekend camp, a 3-day workshop, or as a 6-week program. The program is tailored to meet the needs of the agents in the areas that they service. The purpose of this program is to increase understanding of:

  • History of Technology
  • Facebook
  • E-Mail
  • Social Media
  • Microsoft Word

Science, Technology and Math Academy

This academy is designed to strengthen the Technology, Science and Math skills of participating youth. The goals of the program are:

  • Encourage youth to pursue post-secondary degrees in Math, Science, and Technology.
  • To develop expertise in Math and Science

Services provided by the program include:

  • Training in the production of biofuel.
  • Academic, Financial or Personal Counseling.
  • Hands-on Demonstration and Workshops in Science and Math.
  • Mentoring program that includes tutorial services.
  • Summer programs with intensive math and science training.

4-H National Youth Science Day

The 4-H National Youth Science Day is designed to spark an early youth interest and leadership in Science, Engineering, Technology and Math. This program is open to all ages. Topics covered include:

  • Robotics
  • Agricultural Science
  • Rocketry
  • Wind Power
  • Environmental Science
  • Alternative Energy
