Summer Camps

B.A.Y.O.U. Summer Program

About the Program

This program targets rising high school seniors and incoming college Freshmen who are interested in career opportunities in Agriculture, Family and Consumer science, business, or the natural sciences. Participants gain knowledge of these opportunities through campus and departmental tours, industry excursions, immersion in a collegiate classroom environment, and laboratory experience in the form of a short-term research project.

Eligibility Criteria
  • Have completed the 11th grade with a min. GPA 2.5.Graduating seniors who are interested in agricultural, family and consumer sciences, business or the natural sciences and have an ACT (SAT equivalent) composite score of 18 and above, or High School GPA of 2.5 or greater, or rank top 50% of high school graduation class AND require no more than ONE remedial course.
  • Submit high school transcript
  • Submit ACT/SAT scores (composite 18 or SAT equivalent)
  • 300-500 word essay about your career goals and aspirations (see application for details)

FAB Lab Summer Camps

LEVEL 1 & LEVEL 2: Ages 12-18 (Middle and High School Students)

The Fashion and Business Laboratory (FAB Lab) in the SU College of Agricultural, Human and Environmental Sciences (CAHES) conducts a Youth Leadership Program LEVEL UP summer camp for youth ages 12-18 each summer.

The camp holds two levels. The first level is for beginning sewists and the second level is for intermediate or advanced sewists. Both camps operate from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. in the FAB Lab inside Pinkie Thrift Hall. During the camp, students learn about textiles, fashion design, and apparel entrepreneurship.

To apply, the student must write a one-page essay explaining his/her interest in fashion and apparel entrepreneurship or their previous experience in sewing, and highlight their leadership skills and academic excellence, along with a $25 registration fee and a completed waiver form. A limited number of 20 participants is accepted in both camps.

Quilt Design Summer Camp

(High School Students)

The Southern University College of Agricultural, Human and Environmental Sciences (CAHES) Fashion Merchandising, Design and Textiles Program holds a Quilt Design Summer Camp each summer. The camp operates from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., Monday – Friday, for students aged 14-17 in Pinkie Thrift Hall on the campus of Southern University. Participants learn quilting techniques and complete a quilt to take home.

The camp is limited to 12 participants who will be notified of their acceptance.
