Research

Viticulture & Enology

The Viticulture and Enology research program is advancing grape and wine production to serve the unique needs of Louisiana growers, entrepreneurs, and communities. We conduct regionally relevant research on berry quality traits, pests, and diseases, and provide technical support for new vineyard establishment and varietal selection for expanding the industry in Louisiana.

Our Mission

To enhance the sustainability and profitability of grape and wine production inLouisiana through:

1. Applied research on newly released and existing Pierce's disease (PD)-tolerant grape cultivars
2. Research on the development of new techniques and technologies for disease management, diagnostics, and plant management
3. Evaluating the enological merits of different wine cultivars
4. Community engagement and grower support
5. Education outreach and workforce training

Program Highlights

Grape Varietal Evaluation

Screening PD-tolerant grape cultivars and breeding populations for productivity, disease resistance, and adaptability to Louisiana growing conditions.

Disease & Biological Control Research

Partnering with regional and federal collaborators to develop natural, OMRI-listed solutions for fungal disease management, with a focus on understanding resistance mechanisms.

Post-harvest & Shelf-Life enhancement

Investigating bio stimulators and natural compounds to improve the fruit quality and extend shelf-life and marketability of table muscadine grapes.

Experimental Winemaking & Value-Added Products

Producing small-batch wines and exploring new grape-based products to create opportunities for local growers and entrepreneurs.

Grower Support & Outreach

Providing workshops, field demonstrations, and technical assistance to help farmers establish and manage productive, sustainable vineyards.

Why It Matters

Louisiana’s climate presents a unique challenge-but also untapped potential for grape cultivation. Through innovative research and community-focused extension, SU AgCenter is equipping growers with the tools they need to thrive while creating new opportunities in agriculture and agribusiness.
