Baton Rouge, La. - Thirty students in 6th – 12th grade were immersed in learning experiences ranging from sound engineering and songwriting to filmmaking, and disc jockeying, facilitated by industry experts, during the SU Ag Center’s 3rd Annual Hip Hop to Gen Z Summer Camp.

The two-week camp was held June 1 - 11, 2026 from 8 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. on Southern University’s campus.

Campers produced original music, short films, and live performances during the camp and were able to see that their creativity matters and can lead to real opportunities on the future.

“Programs like Hip Hop to Gen Z are important because they broaden students’ awareness of educational and career pathways that may not otherwise be accessible to them,” said Dr. Raquel Ayles, Associate Vice Chancellor for Extension and Outreach. "Through direct engagement with industry professionals and applied learning experiences, participants develop relevant skills, expand their professional networks, and gain a deeper understanding of opportunities within the creative and entertainment sectors."

The camp concluded with a closing performance, which allowed the campers to showcase their hard work in dance, DJ, vocal, and acting skills with their families and friends.
