Baton Rouge, La. – The Southern University Ag Center’s Annual Spring Garden Workshop drew a crowd of 105 garden enthusiasts. The event was held on April 21, 2026, at the Maurice A. Edmond Livestock Arena Multi-Purpose Building and was hosted by the Center’s Cooperative Extension Program, Wisteria Alliance, the SU College of Ag and the 1890 Center of Excellence in partnership with the Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education (SARE) program, LSU Ag Center, and Baton Roots.

The Spring Garden Workshop is an educational program that helps individuals through hands-on gardening, learning techniques, and skills that they can do at home.

This year’s workshop was themed, “Resilient Roots: Intentional Gardens and Farms,” and focused on providing individuals with information on native plants, urban agriculture, and hydroponics systems.

Session topics included Hydroponics, Urban Agriculture, Plant Spotlight on Hibiscus Roselle, and Native Plants and Native Plant Landscaping.

Participants were also able to visit several vendors such as The Walls Project, the Seed Lady, and Swamp Fly Native Landscapes and Gulf Coast Flora.

The 1890 Center of Excellence also provided succulent plants to the first 60 participants.

At the end the workshop each participant was able to select either an African or a Jamaican Hibiscus plant to take home.
