Baton Rouge, La. – The Southern University College of Agricultural, Human and Environmental Sciences' (CAHES) 3rd Annual Vet Explore 2026 provided 125 high school and undergraduate college students with contact hours, and hands-on experience within the field of veterinary medicine.

The event was held on April 25,2026 inside Fisher and Pinkie Thrift Halls on the Southern University campus.

Vet Explore is the first program of its kind in Louisiana. It provided students with a rare opportunity to gain hands-on experience, engage with professionals, and immerse themselves in the realities of animal care.

“This year, we were proud to welcome students from across the country, including Louisiana, Texas, Mississippi, and Michigan, reflecting the growing reach and influence of our program,” expressed Tyra Davis, D.V.M., VET Explore organizer, Assistant Professor, and Pre-Vet Program Lead for the CAHES. “Despite an unexpected venue relocation, the resilience, teamwork, and commitment of our staff and volunteers ensured a seamless and successful experience for all involved,” she stated.

Participants were able to learn suture techniques, animal care and nutrition, meat science basics, and explore veterinary microscopy and aquaculture. The students were also able to engage in conversations with veterinarians and veterinary school admissions officers as well as receive vet school preparation materials.

Darian Cain, a 16-year-old participant from Zachary High School, said he came to Vet Explore because he wants to become a veterinarian. “We’ve been learning how to use microscopes and looking at parasites and viruses under the microscopes,” said Cain. “Students should attend this event next year, if they want some good experience with animals and to learn things you probably would do as a vet or even in college,” he added.

Vet Explore was made possible by a total of 30 dedicated volunteers, including nine veterinarians, a veterinary technician, CAHES faculty, a dynamic team of animal science and pre-veterinary students, and the generous support of the Louisiana Veterinary Medical Association (LVMA), Hill’s Pet Nutrition, The Luster Group, and the Baton Rouge Area Veterinary Medical Association (BRAVMA).

“Events like Vet Explore continue to demonstrate the power of hands-on learning, collaboration, and community engagement in shaping future veterinary professionals. We remain committed to expanding this initiative and cultivating the next generation of leaders in veterinary medicine,” said Dr. Davis.
