Horticulture
The Southern University Agriculture Research and Extension Center’s Cooperative Extension Horticulture program provides technical horticultural information to local residents and farmers through workshops and seminars, at community events, through media and social media, and with a variety of extension and outreach techniques conducted by SUAREC Extension Agents and Horticultural experts. SUAREC hosts an annual spring and fall garden workshops to inform residents on various horticultural and agricultural hot topics as well as produces horticulturally relevant publications and planting guides. The Horticulture program provides technical assistance guidance for the set up and maintenance of Community and School gardens across the state of Louisiana.
Through our Out the Mud: Connecting Young Adults to Agricultural Opportunities through Experiential Learning USDA/NIFA Capacity Building grant program, three sites have been established. The primary goal of this project is to expose under-resourced students to agricultural opportunities by addressing components of nutrition education, mental health, interpersonal social, and workforce skills to create opportunities. Students participate in a 10-week program to attain a certificate through the program.
Our Horticulture team manages and operates the Babylon Hydroponic Mini-farm located at the campus Mayberry Cafeteria that provides produce to the campus cafeteria.
“Smothered Okra: Garden Talks with a Professional” is an offered virtual series offered to the general public on a bi-monthly basis to discuss horticultural topics and questions. Dates and registration information can be found on www.suagcenter.com.
