The 1890 Center of Excellence at the SU Ag Center continues to work with the community to maintain the Scotlandville Garden Park

Baton Rouge, LA - A successful garden requires patience, love, labor, and attention. That is what the 1890 Center of Excellence (COE) at the SU Ag Center is doing in the Scotlandville community. With the help of the COE's amazing summer interns and community members, the team returned to the Scotlandville Garden Park on July 20, 2022 to check in on the garden after the first Garden Day.

The team and community members weeded the garden and added calcium – nitrate to help revive the tomato plants. Gardening is an enjoyable aerobic activity with mood-boosting abilities. This was experienced by the participants, who all had an overwhelming feeling of calm at the end of the event.

The American Horticulturist, Liberty Bailey once stated, “Plants do not grow merely to satisfy ambitions or to fulfill good intentions. They thrive because someone expended effort on them.” With this thought process, the COE team is reassured of the wonderful things to occur in the future with the garden at the Scotlandville Garden Park.
