SU Ag Center and GOHSEP set to hold a Community Emergency Preparedness Event

Real Preparedness for Real People event to focus on emergency preparedness for older adults
Baton Rouge, La. – The Baton Rouge community is invited to participate in the “Real Preparedness for Real People” community emergency preparedness event on July 17, 2024 at 9 a.m. at the Jewel J. Newman Community Center, located at 2013 Central Road in Baton Rouge, La.
The Southern University Ag Center’s JAGriculture program and the Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness (GOHSEP) have partnered to host the event.
“This is a community event especially tailored towards older adults and vulnerable populations,” said Dr. Krystle Allen, SU Ag Center’s Program Leader for Family and Human Sciences. “We want to ensure they are prepared for this predicted above-normal hurricane season,” she added.
Allen went on to say that this will not be your typical preparedness event.
“This is REAL preparedness. We will have firefighters demonstrating the modification to the Stop, Drop, and Roll fire safety method for older adults, the Louisiana Office of the State Fire Marshall will teach the best way to prepare for power outages and how to use generators safely, and our very own Nutrition Specialist will present on Food Safety after a disaster and healthy alternatives for nonperishable good, and so much more,” expressed Allen.
Additional topics covered during the will include:
- Fortification Efforts to Homes/Property
- Financial Preparations (Emergency Savings and Financial Literacy)
- Insurance Education and Advocacy
- Maintaining Health, Social Services, and Educational Networks and Services
There will also be a special presentation on FEMA’s Individual Assistance Reform.
