SU College of Ag holds successful Welcome Week

Baton Rouge, La.- On August 21-25, 2023, the College of Agricultural, Family and Consumer Sciences (CAFCS) held its highly anticipated Welcome Week event themed "Building Paths to a Brighter Future." The week-long series of activities aimed to provide students with not only a warm welcome but also an inside look into the diverse offerings and opportunities within the College.

The event kicked off on Monday with "Stop for a Piece of Success with SUAREC Chancellor-Dean & CAFCS Vice-Chancellor," where students were treated to more than just free pizza. The occasion presented a unique chance to glean valuable college success insights from Dr. Orlando McMeans, the Chancellor-Dean of SUAREC, and Dr. Renita Marshall, Vice-Chancellor and Associate Dean of CAFCS. The combination of delectable food and sage advice set the tone for a week of interactive and enlightening experiences.

On Tuesday, students saw the embodiment of college spirit with "We are CAFCS." Students in the college received their semester-long badge of pride – the college shirt from the 93rd Miss Southern and SGA members from CAFCS. This tangible representation of belonging showcased the unity that CAFCS fosters among its students.

As the week unfolded, students were treated to a delightful midweek break with "Pretty Cool Wednesday." The College distributed free freeze pops, turning the sweltering summer heat into a more bearable experience and setting the precedent for what promises to be an invigorating semester.

On Thursday, "Get the Scoop" brought students closer to the heart of CAFCS by offering them an insider's perspective. Aspiring minds were introduced to various student organizations, each catering to diverse interests. Food demonstrations and insights into research opportunities, provided by the dedicated faculty and staff of SUAREC, gave students a glimpse into the exciting academic journey that awaits them.

The week was brought to a lively close on Friday with "CAFCS is Popping with Success." TGIF took on a new meaning as CAFCS students enjoyed a complimentary bag of popcorn and a movie screening in Pinkie Thrift's lobby.

Welcome Week 2023 leaves an indelible impression on its students. This series of engaging events not only extended a warm welcome to new and returning students but also gave them the inside scoop on what makes CAFCS an exceptional academic community. From sage advice to vibrant experiences, Welcome Week illuminated the pathways to success within the College.

With the lessons learned, connections made, and memories created during Welcome Week, the students of CAFCS embark on a promising journey into the Fall 2023 semester, equipped with not just knowledge, but also a strong sense of belonging and inspiration.
