St. Kitts and Nevis Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew visits the SU Ag Center

Dr. Terrance Michael Drew, the Prime Minister of Saint Kitts and Nevis, visited the Southern University Ag Center and the Baton Rouge campus on October 2, 2024.

The visit was held to discuss expanding global partnerships with international institutions.

Dr. Drew met with leadership from the Southern University System including Board of Supervisors Chairman Myron Lawson, System President Dennis Shields, SU Ag Center Chancellor and Dean of the College of Ag Dr. Orlando F. McMean, Southern University Baton Rouge campus Chancellor John Pierre and Dr. Barbara Carpenter.

He also toured the Southern University Baton Rouge and Ag Center campuses making stops inside Café LaCumba, Fisher Hall, the Southern Institute for Medicinal Plants (SIMP) Laboratory, and the Southern University Ag Center’s Experiment Station.

“The integration of modern agricultural techniques is critical for the future of food production in small island states,” said Dr. Drew. “Southern University’s advancements in this field provide a model for how we can further develop our own agricultural sectors in St. Kitts and Nevis,” he added.

In December 2023, the Southern University Ag Center signed an MOU with the Saint Kitts and Nevis Ministry of Education to provide sustainable and environmental agriculture consultant services to the Minister of Agriculture, including certification courses in vendor food safety. An MOU with the Southern University Baton Rouge campus was also signed with Saint Kitts and Nevis in September 2023. This MOU allowed the acceptance of credits from CFBC, in-state tuition rates, and recognition of Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) subjects for entry into Southern University by residents of Saint Kitts and Nevis.

Since signing the MOUs four students from Saint Kitts and Nevis have enrolled in Southern University.
