SU Ag Center and the College of Ag set to hold a slate of events to celebrate Homecoming Week 2024

Baton Rouge, La. – The Southern University Agricultural Research and Extension Center (SU Ag Center) and the College of Agricultural, Human and Environmental Sciences (CAHES) will hold several activities for students and alumni during Oct. 15 – 19 to celebrate Homecoming Week 2024.
Activities will begin with the “Mind Your MANNRS Professional Development Workshop,” on Oct. 15 at 11 a.m. in Pinkie Thrift Hall. The workshop will empower students to hone their professional development skills by maximizing all the opportunities provided to them.
The Morrill Society Founding Member Induction will also be held on Oct. 15 at 6:30 p.m. in the Matthews Center for Innovation.
Several events will be held on Oct. 16. The first will be the “Cannabis Chronicles: Insights of Education and Research Social Media Takeover on the SU Ag Center’s social media platforms. Ag Center and College of Ag staff and students will participate in the Southern University Student Health Center’s Annual Homecoming Health Fair from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. in the Smith-Brown Student Union.
The Bra Project: Play Hard, Learn More – Breast Cancer Awareness for a Cause will be held in the courtyard of the Student Union. The event will provide valuable information on the connections between nutrition, public health, and mental health as it relates to breast cancer prevention and care. Participants will also have a chance to engage in an interactive trivia game to test their knowledge of breast cancer facts and stand a chance to win exciting prizes. The Ag Center is currently collecting gently used bras that will be donated to shelters and breast cancer awareness efforts. Donation boxes have been placed at Pinkie Thrift Hall, the J.K. Haynes Hall Nursing Building, Fisher Hall, the J. S. Clark Administration Annex Building, and Mayberry Dining Hall. Donations are being accepted until Oct. 29.
Pretty Wednesday SU Homecoming Fab Lab Edition,” with the Black & Positively Golden McDonald’s Change of Fashion HBCU Tour will also be held on Oct. 16 in front of the Smith-Brown Student Union. The student-centered event will include fashion shows, and panel discussions with fashion designers Nia Thomas and Heart Roberts.
The “Agricultural Career Expo (A.C.E).,” will be held on Oct. 17 from 9:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. in Seymour Gym. Students will have an opportunity to speak with more than 30 exhibitors during the career fair-style event. Key sponsors for this year’s expo are Consolidated Grain and Barge Company; Weyerhaeuser: Sustainable Timber, Forest Products and Land; The Mosaic Company, and the East Baton Rouge Parish Library System. A Networking Mixer will immediately follow the expo.
The JagFresh Farmers Market, Lacumba’s Nutrition Clinic, and the SU Together: Move More, Eat Better class will also be held on Oct. 17. The farmers market will provide a venue for the Southern University community to purchase locally grown fruit, vegetables, eggs, meat, homemade jellies, and other products from local farmers. The nutrition clinic will offer personalized nutrition counseling, healthy eating workshops, and practical tips to help faculty, staff, and students feel their best, both in and out of the classroom. SU Together provides cooking and exercise classes to students. The farmers market and the clinic will be held in the courtyard of the Student Union from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. The SU Together class will begin at 4:15 p.m. in room 157 of Pinkie Thrift Hall.
An “Alumni Mixer,” will be held from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. on Oct. 18 on the lawn of Fisher Hall. The mixer is free and open to College of Ag alumni, faculty, staff, and students.
The 3rd Annual “Vino on the Bluff Scholarship Fundraiser,” will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 18 at the Leon R. Tarver II Cultural and Heritage Center, at 8320 G. Leon Netterville Dr., on the Southern University campus. General admission tickets are $75. Elevated (VIP) tickets are $100 and will include a VIP Whiskey Tasting at sunset.
The event will also include a silent auction, farm-to-table inspired food, live entertainment, door prizes, an exclusive Vino Soul Cypher performance, and an art exhibit tour of the Southern University Museum of Art (SUMA). Funds from the wine tasting will be used to raise scholarship dollars for the Darjean Jones Wines Continuing Education Scholarship Fund for students enrolled in CAHES.
